SPEAKER: Bishop Emmanuel Bawa

MAIN SCRIPTURE:  Colossians 2: 7

Do the Dead Affect Us Who are Alive?

Colossians 2: 7-8 Rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you into captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ

  • Four things noted in the scripture which are very important in our walk with God.
  1. Rooted: have roots in the word/ in God/ in your church

-Trees grow roots to secure them, because there are different kind winds that might uproot them.

  1. Built up: have a foundation that makes things strong
  2. Strengthened in faith: you need to have strong faith to counter challenges
  3. Overflowing with thankfulness: thank God for everything.

  • If we do not have the four above, we are deceived and taken captive by Rituals of men which will perish with its owners.
  • Rituals are not consistence within all cultures, if it is done in another culture its ok, if the same is done with another culture it is wrong.

Subject of the day

Question: What is death?

  • This is the greatest question men has struggled to understand

Gen 3: 3 `But God say, you must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.`

  • Man is made up of two: physical body and Spirit

The Body relates with worldly things

  • The body has Soul that is emotional/the mind.
  • The Soul has feelings, pain, hungry, gets hurt, get excited.

The Spirit relates to the Spirit of God

  • Spirit relates to God’s Spirit – it is fed with the Word of God and operates on faith

Answer: Death is the separation of the two- the Spirit and the Physical Body

  • The body cannot do without the spirit
  • The Spirit need the Body to operate from.

There are two deaths

  • Spiritual death: if you do not have a relation with God you are dead spiritually. You need to be born again
  • Physical death: when the body grow up to a number of years it gives up to death

Psalms 90:10The length of our days is seventy years- or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away’

  • The Body gets sick and tired, but the spirit is not affected.

Matthew 26: 41Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing but the flesh is weak’

  • When we sin, we are sinning against our Spirit because the Spirit is the one that will stand before God to answer
  • When the separation of body and Spirit takes place (DEATH) the Spirit goes back where it came from and the Body into the ground.
  • There is absolutely no relationship between the dead and those who are alive.
